At Misselthwaite, where a little girl is rejected by her uncle, she befriends Dickon, a peasant boy from the village. Together they bring the secret garden to life. Mary begins to come out of her shell and, when she meets her ailing cousin Colin, who is also ten years old, motherless, and rejected by his father, Mary shares her secret garden with him. It is in the secret garden that Mary and Colin come to discover and share the magical renewal of all living things. It is the same spirit of renewal that restores Mary and Colin's physical and mental health, and eventually Colin's father is also transformed.
